Democracy or Fascism?
The GOP wants to strip away the rights of anyone that doesn’t fit their twisted, narrow view of who an “American” is. That means if you are not a rich, white Christian man, you don’t count. They want to take away the rights of women, non-white people, trans people, and LGBTQ Americans. Trump may be gone, but Mitch McConnell, Josh Hawley, Ted Cruz, and the rest of the GOP remain. With help from the Supreme Court, they are not only determined to block progress any way they can, but they want to turn back the clock. To say, 1860.
Plus, Republicans in states like Georgia, Texas, and others are pushing extreme laws designed to strip voting rights from millions, and hand the power to choose our elected representatives to increasingly radical Republican lawmakers. Some even want to override election results! And the Supreme Court will be hearing a case that is primed to help them do just that.
Not to mention the extreme gerrymandering that cancels voters and allows politicians to pick their voters, instead of the other way around.
And, of course, rolling back women’s rights, trans rights, and marriage equality. They want America to go in reverse, all the way back to the civil war era.
Plus, there’s a lot of work to do even in a blue state like New York.
Efforts to roll back bail reform, stalling progress on health care, and lack of funding to stop climate change all hurt New York, as well as the country.
If we want to keep democracy, we’ll have to push for it.
And, never ever get complacent again.
