What you can do about it
This is not the regular newsletter we send every week. Rather, it starts with an appeal to all of you to phone bank in support of abortion rights. The writer of this newsletter had a classmate, who she had known since they were three years old. That classmate was left to bleed to death alone in the woods after a botched abortion. This was before Roe v Wade, and what we are going back to unless we each do what we can to stop states from enacting draconian laws.
I personally have never been willing to phone bank. I don’t answer strange phone numbers, and when I do I hang up if I learn that they are phone banking. But some people do engage with the callers, and each one who does has the potential to prevent the return to those horrific days. And so I will be phone banking, and beseech each of you to do the same.
Here are two organizations that you can phone bank with, and we will add more as they become available.

ACLU’s summer Tuesday trainings: 8 PM ET/5 PM PT every other Tuesday; the next events are August 23rd, and September 6th.

Proof of vaccination or a negative PCR test within the past 24 hours for entry is required.
Join United States Senator Kirsten Gillibrand for a public Manhattan Town Hall on Thursday August 25th at the Schomburg Center in Harlem. She will give brief remarks and answer questions on the topics and issues you care about most. The Senator’s staff will also be available to answer questions and how her office can assist you. Training for how to Talk to Voters & Win the Midterms

Virtual event
Research shows that conversations with voters at their doors or on the phone can win close elections. This training provides all the skills and confidence needed to talk to voters and encourage them to go vote. We have the chance to win the midterms and make progress on expanding abortion access, preventing gun violence, fighting climate change, and preserving democracy itself, if we all work together to increase voter turnout in the swing districts where it matters most.
