Postcarding & Politics with Markers For Democracy
Virtual Event

Bring your GOTV postcards, and join Markers For Democracy to meet Jane Lerner of Movement Voter Project. This organization strengthens progressive power by helping donors – big and small – identify and support promising local community-based organizations in key battleground states, with a focus on youth and communities of color. Supporting local movement vote groups is the most effective and most cost-effective strategy for transforming our country. They focus on hundreds of organizations that both turn out unlikely voters and organize communities to grow their power and create transformation.

Jane Lerner is Major Donor Advisor for MVP. A writer and organizer who lives in Brooklyn, Jane has been published by NPR, NY Post, Time Out, and New York Magazine. The 2016 election galvanized her as a donor and an organizer, inspiring her to be more generous in her own political giving and to motivate others to do the same.

Adopt a red state (turn it blue). Donate to one or split your cash to fund phone banks, texting, and blue candidates in key states.

Pick one:

Adopt Arizona. MAGAs control the state by just two votes in the state House and state Senate. We’ve identified the six most competitive candidates.
Adopt Georgia. The GOP has gerrymandered the hell out of this state. Our realistic goal is to weaken MAGA control and prevent 2024 shenanigans like we saw in 2024. We’ve identified the six most competitive candidates.
Adopt North Carolina. The state is heavily gerrymandered. We won’t be able to flip the entire legislature this cycle, but we can break the MAGA supermajority. We’ve identified the four most competitive candidates.
Adopt Pennsylvania. The big opportunity here is to take the state House. We’ve identified the five most competitive candidates.
Adopt Wisconsin. Similar to North Carolina -- absurd GOP gerrymandering means the goal here is to break the MAGA supermajority. We’ve identified the five most competitive candidates.

Letters to Voters

Write letters to registered Democrats in Georgia or Pennsylvania to encourage voting. Request letters to download for either Georgia or Pennsylvania.  RSVP: Email Melinda at  melinda.indivisible.ues@gmail.com to get addresses.

(No live session this month, but you can request letters to send. Also, if you have Venmo, we can reimburse you for stamps. Ask Melinda for details).

NOTE: All letters should be sent by Oct. 25 to reach voters. The mail has been slow, and we don't want the letters to arrive after the election!

Reproductive Rights are Paramount

Actions for the Week of August 21, 2022

What you can do about it

This is not the regular newsletter we send every week. Rather, it starts with an appeal to all of you to phone bank in support of abortion rights. The writer of this newsletter had a classmate, who she had known since they were three years old. That classmate was left to bleed to death alone in the woods after a botched abortion. This was before Roe v Wade, and what we are going back to unless we each do what we can to stop states from enacting draconian laws.

I personally have never been willing to phone bank. I don’t answer strange phone numbers, and when I do I hang up if I learn that they are phone banking. But some people do engage with the callers, and each one who does has the potential to prevent the return to those horrific days. And so I will be phone banking, and beseech each of you to do the same.

Here are two organizations that you can phone bank with, and we will add more as they become available.

ACLU’s Phonebank Like Your Rights Depend On It
You can join their events, or sign up to phone bank solo.

ACLU’s summer Tuesday trainings: 8 PM ET/5 PM PT every other Tuesday; the next events are August 23rd, and September 6th.
This Abortion Activist Series is collection of virtual events and trainings on how you can join the fight for abortion rights, no matter where you live.

Training for how to Talk to Voters & Win the Midterms
Target Majority and Swing Left
Virtual event

Research shows that conversations with voters at their doors or on the phone can win close elections. This training provides all the skills and confidence needed to talk to voters and encourage them to go vote. We have the chance to win the midterms and make progress on expanding abortion access, preventing gun violence, fighting climate change, and preserving democracy itself, if we all work together to increase voter turnout in the swing districts where it matters most.
